ABS CBN Philippine : A Prime TV Network's Rich Beginnings Worth Looking Back
Alto Broadcasting System-Chronicle Broadcasting Network or ABS CBN Philippine is a multi-media company in the Philippines and so far, the biggest integrated entertainment and media business in the country.
As of June 2008, ABS CBN has an asset base of over PHP32.5 billion. The network is a fraction of the Lopez Group of Companies. ABS-CBN Philippine TV station is predominantly involved in both radio and television broadcasting and television programming production intended for Philippine and international viewers and other associated businesses.
It was in March 2008 when Executive Vice-President Charo Santos-Concio was promoted to be the fifth president of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation. She took over the position from acting president Eugenio Lopez III.
ABS-CBN was founded in June 13, 1946 and was the first commercial television newscaster across the Asia. Through The Filipino Channel (TFC), TFCko and TFCnow Internet TV, the network can broadcast contents all over the world. Its satellite operations and transmitter, broadcast facilities, studio complex and news headquarters are found within the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center along Sergeant Esguerra Avenue, Mother Ignacio Street, Barangay Laging Handa, Diliman, Quezon City. The global VHF station of ABS-CBN is Channel 2 or DWWX-TV. On the other hand, its global UHF station is Studio 23 or DWAC-TV.
ABS-CBN Philippine debut started with Bolinao Electronics Corporation (BEC) which was established by James Lindenberg, venturing in radio broadcasting and equipment assembly. Partnering with Antonio Quirino, the brother of President Elpidio Quirino, they ventured in television broadcasting in 1951. The following year, BEC was renamed as Alto Broadcasting System (ABS). Alto was derived from Quirino and his wife's first names, Aleli and Tony. In 1956, Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN) was created. It was owned by Don Eugenio Lopez, Sr. In 1957, Lopez, Sr. obtained ABS and a decade after, the company name was changed to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation.
ABS-CBN was seized during the Martial Law in 1972 but, in 1986, at the end of Marcos regime, Geny Lopez returned to the Philippines and rebuilt the station and was what was left of it. During that time, the programs from the network were:
