Basil Valdez : The "Undisputed King Of Movie Theme Songs"

Salvador Valdez or Basil Valdez is one of the famous balladeer in the Philippine music industry. Since 1970 Basil was already performing as a solo singer.

Mostly, he performs his own version of the songs by the likes of Simon and Garfunkel and Joan Baez.

In 1972, he became a member of the circus band. Soon after, he released his very first album entitled "Ngayon at Kailanman" carrying his very first famous hit song of the same title. This memorable composition is one of the 20 songs composed by George Canseco, another famous name in the Philippine music industry. The composer was very poetic and he admired the voice of Basil. The some was so nostalgic that when sung by Basil suddenly became perfect in all aspects of its rhythm and rhyme. While he was in the band, he encountered a pianist named Ryan Cayabyab, which was then a member of a different band.

At that time, Basil contracted Ryan to contribute a few songs, which he did. Despite of the good performance, Cayabyab became the musical director of Basil for 27 years. In 1980's Basil was declared as "King of movie theme songs". Some of Basil's immortal hit songs that also were made into movie theme songs were " Paraisong Parisukat" "Muling Buksan ang Puso" and "Paano Ba Ang Pangarap". His success was boosted further when he did the song "Lift up Your Hands" in 1985 which was played on several stations in the county.

Unfortunately, Basil had to undergo an operation for his kidney, which immobilized his career. For over 15 years of performing, he persuaded himself to accomplish something different. At that time, he started teaching and painting. He also became a Philosophy professor because he was a graduate of AB philosophy at the ADMU. His teaching did not stop here, he also taught religion classes in Xavier school.

Aside from singing, he also spends time in healing by literally putting his hands to an aching part of a patient. Surprisingly he healed a number already. Upon discovery of this new gift of healing he consulted his Jesuits friends who also recognized that Basil has a healing gift. For more than 11 years now Basil healed over 3000 patients with different illness.

As one of the most fascinating Filipino singers, he was able to produce 10 albums and several of these were certified platinum. Basil Valdez also did some concerts and gigs locally and worldwide which were either full or sold out.
