Cebu is not only a commercially progressive region but it has several prestigious Cebu universities as well making Cebu the educational hub in the Philippines.

The University in the Visayas is one among the acclaimed universities known for quality education. It was first establish as the Visayan Institute in 1919. Its main philosophy is to serve while promoting love, service, and leadership.

The Southwestern University is perhaps the only university in the Philippines that began its operation in summer. It was establish amidst the recovery of the country from the destruction of the World War II and its founders found the opportunity to provide education among the masses whose opportunity to obtain education was curtailed by the war.

The university now offers about 50 degree programs both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Their enrolment balloons to 10 thousands each year allowing them to increase the number of their faculty members to 400 and employ 400 non-teaching staff. The university underwent expansion with the construction of more buildings and extension to more than 20 colleges.

The University further built a tertiary hospital and a drug rehabilitation center. It also has a museum that shows the arts and lifestyle among the Cebuanos from the pre-historic to modern era. With their thrust to provide education excellence, they accredit their program courses with the Philippine accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and University (PAASCU).

Their courses offered include education, arts and sciences, nursing, commerce, pharmacy, computer studies and engineering among the few of its several program courses.

The University of San Carlos is a Catholic educational institution that promotes the principle of discipline in academic of the San Carlos Borromeo and missionary charism of the Society of the Divine Word.
