Cebu Universities: The Education Hub In The Visayas Region

Cebu is not only a commercially progressive region but it has several prestigious Cebu universities as well making Cebu the educational hub in the Philippines.

It is notable that many students from across the country go to study in Cebu. This is because they strongly believe on the quality education that they can obtain from the different Cebu universities.

Popular Cebu Universities

The University in the Visayas is one among the acclaimed universities known for quality education. It was first establish as the Visayan Institute in 1919. Its main philosophy is to serve while promoting love, service, and leadership.

The University in the Visayas aims to provide education opportunity to all most especially to the less privileged but deserve to obtain good education. The main accredited courses of the University include the programs on Commerce, Education, Arts and Sciences, Nursing, and Maritime Programs. The Commission on Accreditation accredits each of the courses and each program is going up to higher levels of accreditation as they continue to provide improvements on their program courses.

In order to provide the opportunity to the less privilege to obtain education, the university offered in 1965 to 1975 a study now pay later scheme to students who deserve to continue their education. Later they provided the Inday Pining Grant to the Disabled and poor students who deserve quality education. The university granted about 5,103 scholarships in five years.

Other programs of the university include the Vicente Gullas grants given to government employees, administrators, teachers, and military personnel and their dependents. This totals to Php 8 million worth of benefits that reflect the university's dedication to extend quality education in the city of Cebu.

The Southwestern University is perhaps the only university in the Philippines that began its operation in summer. It was establish amidst the recovery of the country from the destruction of the World War II and its founders found the opportunity to provide education among the masses whose opportunity to obtain education was curtailed by the war.

The university now offers about 50 degree programs both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Their enrolment balloons to 10 thousands each year allowing them to increase the number of their faculty members to 400 and employ 400 non-teaching staff. The university underwent expansion with the construction of more buildings and extension to more than 20 colleges.

The University further built a tertiary hospital and a drug rehabilitation center. It also has a museum that shows the arts and lifestyle among the Cebuanos from the pre-historic to modern era. The university continuously promotes excellence in providing quality education in Cebu. With their thrust to provide education excellence, they accredit their program courses with the Philippine accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and University (PAASCU).

Their courses offered include education, arts and sciences, nursing, commerce, pharmacy, computer studies and engineering among the few of its several program courses.

The University of San Carlos is a Catholic educational institution that promotes the principle of discipline in academic of the San Carlos Borromeo and missionary charism of the Society of the Divine Word.

Their educational programs aim to the development of socially responsible and competent professionals. They promote a learning environment that fosters the excellent academic process revolving in teaching and learning with community extension services. It adapts its curricular program to the globally changing world to provide quality education among their students enabling them to be globally competitive.

Education at Its Best

Because of the several Cebu universities it has become the main education hub in the Visayas region. It is notable that students in these universities are not mainly Cebuanos. Many people from the neighboring regions come to Cebu for their educational uplifting. Prestigious accrediting associations ensure that the course programs of Cebu universities are at its best.
